Professor Austin Smith is an MRC Professor at the Wellcome Trust - Medical Research Council Cambridge Stem Cell Institute. He has previously coordinated the European Commission projects EuroStemCell and EuroSyStem, he currently coordinates the PluriMes Project. The Smith lab studies embryonic stem (ES) cells and derivative tissue stem cells. Their goal is to understand the molecular foundations of self-renewal and commitment. They are investigating determinants of the decision to retain or exit pluripotency and the mechanism of lineage choice. They are also interested in the relationship between stem cell lines propagated in culture and progenitor cells in vivo.
