Professor Paolo Bianco

The entire PluriMes team is deeply saddened by the loss of our dearly respected colleague Professor Paolo Bianco who passed away unexpectedly on 7 November. Paolo made a lasting contribution to stem cell research by articulating the concept of a skeletal stem cell resident exclusively in bone marrow that is multipotent and functionally distinct from other mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs). Paolo’s work in Plurimes, which will be continued by his team under the direction of his colleague Professor Mara Riminucci, has provided further proof of the distinction between authentic skeletal stem cells and what he described as the “moveable feast” of MSCs.

For tributes to Paolo Bianco see articles written by Elena Cattaneo and Gilberto Corbellini, Michele De Luca and Luca Pani on the EuroStemCell website.
